Harris County is a county
located in the U.S. state of Texas within the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown
metropolitan area. As of 2010 U.S. Census, the county had a population of
4.1 million, making it the most populous county in Texas and the
third most populous county in the United States. Its county seat is
Houston, the largest city in Texas. It was founded in 1836. Harris County
is named for John Richardson Harris, an early settler of the area.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,778
square miles (4,605.0 km2), of which 1,729 square miles
(4,478.1 km2) is land and 49 square miles (126.9 km2)
